Forecast Sayings

Part 1:

Find at least 10 Forecast sayings that you have never heard of.  Write them down and be prepared to share them with the rest of the class.  Try to find an additional few that you have heard before.

Part 2:

Take a look at the accuracy and science behind some of these sayings.  Do a one page research paper on 3-4 forecast sayings.  State what the saying is and explain how people came to that conclusion and why.

For Example: (you cannot do this one, because I have already done it!)

“A ring around the sun or moon, means rain or snow coming soon.”

  • A ring around the moon is caused by cirrus clouds which usually come before a low pressure system.  Low pressure systems usually mean stormy weather which would bring precipitation.  So the next time there is a ring around the moon, rain or snow will likely follow soon.
  • A ring around the sun is not that easy.  A ring around the sun means that there will be a change within the next 12 to 24 hours.  If the weather is stormy when you see the ring, you will see good weather soon.  If the weather is nice and sunny when you see the ring, be prepared for some nasty weather soon.
